贾宝玉被父亲贾政严管读书，他自己根本没心思读，翻开《古乐府》，看到曹操“对酒当歌，人生几何”时，顿时感慨万千，就放下一本又拿另一本，来回翻阅，根本不认真。袭人一时摸不着头脑，也只管站在旁边呆呆的看着他，后来干脆放他出去玩。
