当头棒喝的典故

唐朝时期，佛教的临济宗师以棒喝作为传道的方法，传说禅师马祖在弟子百丈参见时对他大喝一声，震得他三天之内还耳聋眼花。黄檗向弟子临济传道时，举棒就打，并且连打三次，临济只好自己苦心研究，终于弄清佛法的奥秘。
