汉景帝时期，河间王刘德特别喜欢研究儒家的经典著述，他读儒学时总是根据实例求证真相。他从民间得到好书后，亲自抄写一份给原主，同时还赠以金银。因此很多人慕名给他送书。长此以往，他的藏书比朝廷的存书还多。
