公元493年，南朝齐武帝死后，萧昭业继位，吏部尚书徐孝嗣辅佐执政。西昌侯萧鸾密谋要篡位，就密告徐孝嗣。徐孝嗣没有反对，两人联合勒死萧昭业，篡位成功。张弘策评论徐孝嗣像在鼻子穿上绳的牛一样，听人牵引。
