卷土重来的典故

楚汉相争之时，最后刘邦取得了胜利，他包围了项羽，虽楚霸王后来突围，但只剩下了二十八名残兵败将，逃到了乌江（即现在安徽省乌江镇）。汉军的数千追兵仍在穷追不舍。此时乌江亭长驾着一条小船来接应项羽说：“江东虽小，但是亦有千里土地，数十万人口，你仍可在江东为王。所以，请你快上船渡江吧！”项羽苦笑着说：“天意要亡我，渡江还有什么意思呢？何况，当年同我一起渡江西进的八千江东子弟，而今无一生还，即使江东父老还能拥戴我为王，我已到今日这般天地，自己还有脸面见他们吧？”项羽说完，立即拔剑自刎而死。

杜牧后来游览项羽自杀之地，感慨万千。他写的《题乌江亭》诗中“卷土重来未可知”，即感叹若项羽当年没自杀身亡，而是渡江积蓄力量，再与刘邦较量，那么，谁胜谁负还很难说呢！
