家喻户晓的典故

汉朝人编的一部《烈女传》里记载了这样一件事：有个名叫梁姑的女子，一天，她的房屋不慎失火。她哥哥的一个小孩和她自己的两个小孩，都在屋里。她冒火冲进屋去，本来想先抢救她哥哥的小孩，可是抢出一看，却是自己的一个孩子。这时，火势已猛，没法再进去了。她急得双脚直跳，捶胸大哭道：“这怎么得了呀！我不是要背上自私的恶名了吗？我姓梁的岂能‘户告人晓’，让人骂呢？我还有什么脸面见人啊！……”说着，不顾一切，投身火海，最终被火烧死了。

这里的“户告人晓”是“家家互相传告，人人都知道”的意思。后来又有人写作“家至户晓”是“家家都传到，户户都知道”的意思。逐渐地，就变成今天的“家喻户晓”了。
