春秋时期，孔子在鲁国政坛遭到排挤后，带领弟子们周游列国，先后在卫国、宋国等没受到重视，在赴晋的途中，子路劝他不要去投奔赵鞅这种小人，孔子相信自己是君子，会“磨而不磷，涅而不缁”，不会玷污自己的名声的。
