裴说，桂州（今广西桂林）人。唐哀帝天祐三年（906）丙寅科状元及第。该科进士二十五人。考官：吏部侍郎薛廷珪。裴说生于乱世，早年窘迫于乱离，奔走于道路。诗句"避乱一身多"引起众人共鸣。自幼勤奋攻读。曾任补阙、礼部员外郎，天祐四年（907），天下大乱，裴见升迁无望，即携眷南下，唐朝灭亡，全家于湖南石首一地约住半年，又因战火波及，再向家乡逃难，不久，于旅途中死去。裴说为诗讲究苦吟炼意，追求新奇，又工书法，以行草知名。
