生卒年不详。一云名融。郡望河南（今河南洛阳），祖籍太原（今属山西），后移居鲁山（今属河南）。元结从弟。天宝中从元结学于商余山。生平散见元结《箧中集序》、《唐诗纪事》卷三二、《唐才子传》卷三《张众甫传》。孙望撰《箧中集作者事辑》有元季川条。季川与于逖、赵微明等人俱为山巅水涯苦学贞士，咏吟性灵，多写隐逸生活，质朴淡泊，为元结所重，选其诗4首入《箧中集》。
