吴楚间人，与张祜齐名。字若济，号笔山，明代甘棠人。嘉靖八年(1529)登进士，擢任监察御史。为官清正廉明，遇事敢言，纠劾不避权贵。世宗夸称为“真御史”。任上严惩贪官。齐办各类狱案，深得民心。去职后，建书院，讲学术，尊祟程朱理学，著有《笔山文集》10卷行世。其诗风清丽雅秀，语言超逸。诗八首，其中《别妻》、《咏春风》、《杂嘲二首》（其一）等皆是佳作，又尤以《别妻》为最善。
