宋神宗元丰七年（1084年）十二月，苏轼渡淮至泗州治所，该词是苏轼在佛寺浴身有感而作。

第一、二句，将心比心，现身说法来谈浴佛的生理效果，只有“自净”才能彼净。这一富有哲理的佛学思想，显示出苏轼天涯沦落不沉沦的勇气。“汗流”代指污垢除尽，“呀气”代指浊气被完全清除，所以苏轼感到浴佛是特别舒适的。
第三、四句，进深一层，借“寄语澡浴人”之机肉身游戏，摒除杂念，心不散乱，专注一境，抒发了苏轼运用佛学思想来游戏人生，以娱身心。其心理平衡的效果是显而易见的，苏轼也常得趣于某事或懂得其中奥妙而以游戏出之。
最后三句，近乎一种呼喊：径直洗吧！径直洗吧！不仅仅是为了个人“洗荣辱”，更重要的是为了冲刷人间众生的一切苦难，这正是苏轼要做一个“清净人”“肉身”而游戏三昧的真谛。
全词侧重于浴佛的效果及其心理探索，所表述的思想意义全在于苏轼的“不须天眼，自然观见，十分世界”的宇宙观和“得于自然，游戏三昧”的人生观。正因为“居士本来无垢”，所以苏轼才有资格喊出“俯为人间一切”的人道主义呼声。

苏轼（1037－1101），北宋文学家、书画家、美食家。字子瞻，号东坡居士。汉族，四川人，葬于颍昌（今河南省平顶山市郏县）。一生仕途坎坷，学识渊博，天资极高，诗文书画皆精。其文汪洋恣肆，明白畅达，与欧阳修并称欧苏，为“唐宋八大家”之一；诗清新豪健，善用夸张、比喻，艺术表现独具风格，与黄庭坚并称苏黄；词开豪放一派，对后世有巨大影响，与辛弃疾并称苏辛；书法擅长行书、楷书，能自创新意，用笔丰腴跌宕，有天真烂漫之趣，与黄庭坚、米芾、蔡襄并称宋四家；画学文同，论画主张神似，提倡“士人画”。著有《苏东坡全集》和《东坡乐府》等。
