译文
英英的舞姿真是美妙，就像章台柳之袅娜，似昭阳飞燕之轻柔。多少有钱有势的人，富贵人家的筵会上，都争着以千金之价选她去作陪。只见她回头看了看，音乐开始飘扬，她随之翩翩起舞，似杨柳扶风，身上的佩环也随着舞蹈微微颤动。
突然转入了《霓裳羽衣曲》中节奏急促的段落，她更加施展出自己柔媚轻盈的身段，紧紧地依檀板声而舞。英英一会儿慢舒广袖，一会儿急动莲步，进退之间仪态万方，表情丰富多变，妩媚多姿。看英英之美，何止是倾国倾城，她突然回头的一刹那，足以令万人为之消魂！
注释
英英：不详。当为词人虚拟的歌妓名。
章台，本为汉代长安一条繁华街道名。昭阳燕，指赵飞燕。这里是以赵飞燕之“柔若无骨”与前句“腰肢软”相照应的。
是处：到处，处处。
霓裳：即《霓裳羽衣曲》，传说是唐玄宗聆听天乐后而制成（详《唐逸史》、《广德初异录》）。促、遍，古代音乐术语，促是促拍；遍是大曲的段落。盈盈：仪态美好的样子。盈，通“赢”。古乐府《日出东南隅行》：“盈盈公府步，冉冉府中趋。”
檀板：檀木所制的拍板。《旧唐书·音乐二》：“拍板，长阔如手，厚寸余，以韦连之，击以代扦。”唐杜牧《自宣州赴官入京路逢裴坦制官归宣州因题赠》：“画堂檀板秋拍碎，一引有时连十觥。”
莲步：这里指舞步。《南史·齐东昏侯传》载，东昏侯用黄金制成莲花贴在地上，命宠妃潘妃行走于上，谓“步步生莲花也”。
倾国倾城：喻指绝美的女子。
断肠：此指为舞者的美艳而绝倒。

写舞的诗词曲不在少数，最著名的要推杜甫的《观公孙大娘弟子舞剑器行》了，其中“来如雷霆收震怒，罢如江海凝青光”二旬，布在人口，咸人尽知。杜诗的这两句，也是化用《诗经》“如雷如霆，徐方震惊。王奋厥武，如震如怒。”真是无一字无来处。如果说杜诗写的是健舞、武舞，那么柳永这里则写的是软舞、文舞。先写英英的“腰肢软”，以柳之轻柔与赵飞燕的“柔若无骨”以张目。然而这软舞亦非一成不变，促拍乍起，檀板急催，节奏快起来了。于是“慢垂霞袖”，这大约是过渡中的一个静场、一个定格，或者说是蓄势待发，终于是“急趋莲步、进退奇容千变”。所谓“奇容千变”，便是舞者随节奏的变化，舞姿神态亦不断变化，不断翻新出奇，酣畅淋漓，真的是令观者目醉神迷，“万人断肠”了。此词不失为写舞的一个范例，读之者依稀感受到古典舞蹈的无穷魅力。这里的“奇容”之“容”，非指面容、脸庞，而是指舞姿，即舞容。
词的层次感较强，“丝管初调”时，是“倚轻风，佩环微颤”，下片起渐人佳境。而结句的“暂回眸”尤妙，这大约是结束舞蹈前一个惊鸿一瞥的动作神态，接下来应该就是掌声雷动了。全词章法谨严，秀润清朗，真可谓清歌傍水，妙舞当花，洵为佳作。

柳永，（约987年—约1053年）北宋著名词人，婉约派代表人物。汉族，崇安（今福建武夷山）人，原名三变，字景庄，后改名永，字耆卿，排行第七，又称柳七。宋仁宗朝进士，官至屯田员外郎，故世称柳屯田。他自称“奉旨填词柳三变”，以毕生精力作词，并以“白衣卿相”自诩。其词多描绘城市风光和歌妓生活，尤长于抒写羁旅行役之情，创作慢词独多。铺叙刻画，情景交融，语言通俗，音律谐婉，在当时流传极其广泛，人称“凡有井水饮处，皆能歌柳词”，婉约派最具代表性的人物之一，对宋词的发展有重大影响，代表作 《雨霖铃》《八声甘州》。
