译文
你处在临蒸，也用不着叹息身处在炎热的南方，秋天到来时还有几行大雁到你那里栖息。
真正的南方，像林邑，曲折的山势像剑戟般高耸；像牂牁，南流的水像开水一样滚烫。
正是淅沥的芦苇含着秋雾的时候，也正是玲珑的橘柚透着夕阳的色泽之际。
我虽然不是江南白苹洲般的游客，仍然寄上这首诗，来表达对潇湘水边的你的遥远祝福。
注释
卢衡州：名字不详，当为出守衡州刺史的卢姓友人。衡州，今湖南衡阳市。
临蒸：衡阳旧名，县城东傍湘江，北背蒸水。
炎方：南方炎热之地。
雁几行：衡阳有回雁峰，相传每年秋天大雁南飞至此不再南去，到第二年春天再往北飞。这里一则劝慰卢衡州莫叹南方之炎热，一则询问秋来大雁来衡的景况。
林邑：古地名，治所北临骥州，在今越南境内。
戟（jǐ）：古兵嚣的一种，长杆顶端装有月牙形的利刃。
牂牁（zāng kē）：古郡名，辖境约当今贵州大部、云南东部，广西西北部。又，水名，即牂牁江，流经广西，至广州入海。
汤：热水。
蒹葭（jiān jiā）：一名荻，即芦苇。
渐沥（xī lì），风吹芦苇的声响。
柚，橘类果木，即柚子。
白蘋洲畔客：指南朝诗人柳恽，柳恽字文畅，河东人，工诗善琴，后贬吴兴太守，作《江南曲》云：”汀洲采白蘋，日暖江南春，洞庭有归客，潇湘逢故人。”
潇湘：湖南境内的两条水名，这里代指在湖南为官的卢衡州。

得卢衡州书因以诗寄创作背景
据宋人韩醇《诂训柳集》卷四十二考证，这首诗作于元和十一年（816）秋。当过衡州刺史的卢姓友人写信给柳宗元，抱怨所在的衡阳气候炎热难耐，诗人在答诗中以柳州之恶劣劝慰身在潇湘的友人知足常乐。

首联点出友人在之前的来信中讲了很多有关衡阳这个地方不好的牢骚话，表示难以忍受衡阳这个地方。诗人回信后告诉他不要这样悲观地想。秋来雁至，正好可借雁寄语。
颔联写出柳州地形复杂，气候炎热，若拿柳州与衡阳相比，环境更难以忍受，然而诗人自己都已经适应了，那么友人就不应该再有不满的情绪了。
颈联写衡阳一带美好的景色，对偶工整，色泽明丽，起承上启下的过渡作用。
此诗内含悲情而意悠境远，首联的“为报秋亲雁几行”和尾联的“还将远意问潇湘”，均有高朗舒畅、风情摇曳之致。前四句是接来书后对柳州居地的“报”，后四句是因思念友人而对衡州一地的“问”，一“报”一“问”，正好将全诗绾合起来，最能见出作者的作意及其在句法、结构安排上的技巧。

柳宗元（773年－819年），字子厚，唐代河东（今山西运城）人，杰出诗人、哲学家、儒学家乃至成就卓著的政治家，唐宋八大家之一。著名作品有《永州八记》等六百多篇文章，经后人辑为三十卷，名为《柳河东集》。因为他是河东人，人称柳河东，又因终于柳州刺史任上，又称柳柳州。柳宗元与韩愈同为中唐古文运动的领导人物，并称“韩柳”。在中国文化史上，其诗、文成就均极为杰出，可谓一时难分轩轾。
