红毛国，旧许与中国相贸易,边帅见其众，不许登岸。红毛人固请赐一毡地足矣。帅思一毡所容无几，许之。其人置毡岸上，但容二人，拉之容四五人。且拉且登，顷刻毡大亩许，已登百人矣。短刃并发，出于不意，被掠数里而去。

译文
红毛国，过去许诺与中国互通贸易。边防的元帅见他们来的人太多，就不准许他们登岸。红毛国的人再三请求说：“只要赐给我们一块毛毡那么大的地方就足够了。”元帅想，一块毛毡能容纳的人没有几个，就答应了。红毛国的人就把毛毡放到岸上，仅能容纳两个人；他们把毛毡拉扯一下，就能容纳四五人；他们一边拉扯毛毡一边从船上登陆，顷刻之间，毛毡大到一亩多，已能容纳数百人了。这些红毛国人一齐抽出短刀，由于出其不意，被他们劫掠了好几里的地方才离去。
注释
红毛国：明、清时有些人称英国、荷兰国为“红毛国”。据《明史·和兰传》及《清史稿·邦交志》，自明 万历中，荷兰海商始借船舰与中国往来。迄崇帧朝，先后侵扰澎湖、漳州、 台湾、广州等地，强求通商，但屡遭中国地方官员驱逐，不许贸易；惟台湾 一地，荷兰人以武力据守，始终不去。清顺治间，荷兰要求与清政府建交， 至康熙二年遣使入朝。其后清廷施行侮禁。二十二年，荷兰以助剿郑成功父 子功，首请开海禁以通市，清廷许之，乃通贸易。本篇所记，系据作者当时 传闻，时、地未详。

许。上文有四个“许”，它们的含义分为两类：“旧许与中国相贸易”、“不许登岸”、“许之”中的三个“许”，均指“允许”、“答应”；“顷刻毡大亩许”中的“许”，指“左右”、“约”、“光景”，意为顷刻之间那块毡毯就扩大到一亩地左右。

蒲松龄（1640－1715）字留仙，一字剑臣，别号柳泉居士，世称聊斋先生，自称异史氏，现山东省淄博市淄川区洪山镇蒲家庄人。出生于一个逐渐败落的中小地主兼商人家庭。19岁应童子试，接连考取县、府、道三个第一，名震一时。补博士弟子员。以后屡试不第，直至71岁时才成岁贡生。为生活所迫，他除了应同邑人宝应县知县孙蕙之请，为其做幕宾数年之外，主要是在本县西铺村毕际友家做塾师，舌耕笔耘，近40年，直至1709年方撤帐归家。1715年正月病逝，享年76岁。创作出著名的文言文短篇小说集《聊斋志异》。
