译文
刚刚接近中秋，月已清圆，似是在鸦青色的幕布上挂着一团冰盘。
忽然间，觉得今夜的月亮，独自行进在，与天隔离的空间。
注释
诚斋：南宋高宗绍兴二十四年（1154）杨万里进士及第，授赣州司户，继调永州零陵丞。时张浚谪居永州，万里力请始见。张勉以“正心诚意”之学，万里终身服之，并名其书室曰“诚斋”。
鸦青幕挂一团冰：谓鸦青色的天空悬挂着一轮寒冰似的明月。幕：帷幕这里指天空。
元：同原。
粘天：附着天。

《八月十二日夜诚斋望月》正是诗人晚居家中，于诚斋望月，一时兴发而作。

八月十二日夜诚斋望月鉴赏
俗话说：“月到中秋分外明。”诗的首句正是袭用这句俗语的语意。“才近”二字，扣题目的“八月十二”，只差三天，便是中秋，真称得上“近”了。本来每月的望日，月亮都是光明的，而这句俗语突出的是“中秋”，重点在“分外”。分外者，特别之意也，即较之其他月份更要清亮一点。八月十二，虽还未到中秋，但却接近中秋；虽未达到“分外”，却也是“已清”了。这已初步道出了题意。
第二句，进一步写“望”。诗人所望见的是“鸦青幕挂一团冰”。仰望高空，俨如帷幕，色比鸦青，倍觉淡雅。在这淡雅的帷幕之上，悬挂着一轮明月，色泽的优雅、美丽，颇能引人入胜。还不止此，在这里诗人不说“月”而说“一团冰”。团者，圆也；而冰的内涵首先是凉其次是亮，再次是白，这较之“一轮月”不仅更为形象，而且创造出一个既优美又冷清，既光明而又优雅的境界。它不仅给与读者以美的享受，而且能给人以情操的陶冶。
第三句在全诗中是一个转折，是第二句到第四句的一个过渡。“忽然觉得今宵月”，通俗易懂，简直就是一句白话。这种语言，新鲜活泼，是诚斋诗的特点之一。
第四句则说明“忽然觉得”的内容，也就是对“今宵月”的一个遐想。月是历代诗人最喜欢歌咏的景物之一。在诗人的笔下，月是千姿百态、各不相同的，而他们由月所引起的遐想，也是各不相同的。而诗人能独辟蹊径，别有所想，出人意表。诗人想的是这个月亮“元不粘天独自行”。“元”即“原”字，意思的“原来月亮并不是粘在天上而是独自行走的”。夜空片云全无，一轮明月高悬，似乎无所附丽，独自运行。设想新奇，月夜晴空的境界全出。
这首小诗，既创造出优美的境界，给读者以美的享受；又出以新奇的遐想，启迪着读者的思路；而那种通俗的语言，虽然传统的诗家，视为“鄙俗”，却使读者感到新鲜活泼。
