译文
灯残风灭，香炉之烟也已经变冷，相伴的只有自己孤单的身影。情愿喝得酩配大醉，借清酒来麻醉自己，问世间醒眼的是什么人。
相聚难离别易，唯又离别之时的酒宴，喝完之后独自搔头。闲愁总是交付喝醉来入眠，只害怕醒来时候自己依然在酒器面前。
注释
虞美人：词牌名，此调原为唐教坊曲，初咏项羽宠姬虞美人，因以为名。双调，五十六字，上下片各四句，皆为两仄韵转两平韵。
炉烟：熏炉或香炉之烟。
判：情愿、甘愿、不惜之意。清樽（zūn）：酒器，借指清酒（清醇之酒）。亦作“ 青樽 ”。亦作“ 清罇 ”。
醒眼：清醒之眼光。
花间酒：谓美景良辰时之酒宴。
搔首：以手搔头。焦急或有所思貌。

康熙二十年（1681），顾贞观正在京城，逢母丧欲南归无锡，这首《虞美人》，即是写在与知己分别之后。

虞美人·残灯风灭炉烟冷鉴赏
“残灯风灭炉烟冷，相伴唯孤影。”起笔便是一副凄凉孤寂之境。夜风骤起，吹灭了摇曳的灯火，香炉里的烟灰早就凉透了。一阵风将房间里唯一的光明和温暖，不由分说地夺走了，只剩下一个孤零零的影子，伴着孤零零的词人。
“判教狼藉醉清樽，为问世问醒眼是何人？”既然无人作伴，只有清酒陪伴自己。纳兰所说的“醒眼”之人，便是屈原这般不随波逐流，英雄式的理想主义者。纳兰又何尝不是在以屈原自喻。身边小人对权势趋之若鹜，纳兰始终冷眼以对，保持高洁之心，只是，这样一人对抗千军万马的日子，多么的孤单，多么的凄凉。
“难逢易散花问酒，饮罢空搔首。”纳兰心事无人知，只有友人顾贞观懂他，但是相聚之日不多，不能时常与纳兰互诉衷肠，饮酒作诗。纳兰不住地叹息，别离漫长，相逢苦短，知己已去，剩自己一人面对这早早散了的宴席。酒喝光了，只能对着满桌的空杯搔首长叹。
“闲愁总付醉来眠，只恐醒时依旧到樽前。”这句写得无限凄凉。既然闲愁萦怀，难以排遣，就让酒来麻醉它们吧，然后，再麻醉我自己，换得一时的安稳睡眠。可是醒来之后依然孑然一身，依然愁绪满怀、怕是又要到酒杯面前，喝得大醉一场。

纳兰性德（1655－1685），满洲人，字容若，号楞伽山人，清代最著名词人之一。其诗词“纳兰词”在清代以至整个中国词坛上都享有很高的声誉，在中国文学史上也占有光采夺目的一席。他生活于满汉融合时期，其贵族家庭兴衰具有关联于王朝国事的典型性。虽侍从帝王，却向往经历平淡。特殊的生活环境背景，加之个人的超逸才华，使其诗词创作呈现出独特的个性和鲜明的艺术风格。流传至今的《木兰花令·拟古决绝词》——“人生若只如初见，何事秋风悲画扇？等闲变却故人心，却道故人心易变。”富于意境，是其众多代表作之一。
