译文
从常州回江阴的路上，所到之处到处都是空荡荡的篱笆院落，颓败的江村景象让人触目惊心。
因为少有人迹，路边的野花看上去颜色惨淡；频繁的春雨，使鸟鸣听上去也满含寒意。
上官才刚刚上任，我也还没有辞官而去。
今年春天，首要的任务是平息战乱，谁还有心来关心民生的凋敝、江村的残破？

自常州还江阴途中作鉴赏
当去年夏天，李嘉祐还在哀叹自己命运多蹇，考虑要不要辞官而去的时候，一场突然而来的战事打破了平淡的生活，刘展军队如秋风扫落叶一般，席卷过江阴大地，李嘉祐没有经历安史之乱，面对战争他有点手足无措，不知道如何应对判断，开始的时候甚至都分不清谁是谁非，江阴的老百姓出逃的出逃，被征兵的征兵，作为文官的李嘉祐似乎对这一切也无能为力，只能坚守江阴，等待时局的稳定。
好在战乱来得快去得也快，但是战争对江阴的伤害短时间却无法恢复。上元二年春，李嘉祐去常州谒见新任常州刺史，回来的路上，看到满目疮痍的江村，心情应该是无比沉重的，一句“谁肯问凋残”，表达了李嘉祐对民生的关怀，也让他的诗名好了不少。
首联“处处空篱落，江村不忍看”，前句是直接看到的，后句说不忍看，却偏还要看，江村的残破避无可避，直击人心。
颔联是本诗的精华所在，可见诗人遣词造句的功力。前句是视觉的感受，花色本不会因为战争而有所改变，但在诗人看来，人民的悲惨境遇却通过花色反映了出来，赋予的花色别样的意味。后句是听觉的感受，虽然写的是声音，却同样赋予了鸟鸣声以感情色彩，一个寒字，反映了诗人当时的心情。
颈联和尾联隐约地表达了乱后初定，诗人意图收拾残局，重新经营民生的愿望。同时也流露出对时局的无奈和彷徨。不过李嘉祐并没有机会重整江阴了，因为当年春天，他就升官去当台州刺史了。
此后，江南到大历年间，才渐渐从刘展之乱中恢复过来，《旧唐书》卷185下《萧定传》载：“大历中，有司条天下牧守课绩，唯定（润州刺史萧定）与常州刺史萧复、濠州刺史张镒为理行第一。其勤农桑，均赋税，逋亡归复，户口增加，定又冠焉。”
