译文
我就要凭借佩剑远行千里了，微贱的我冒昧地向您说一句话。
战国时，曾在大梁做过门客的人，都没有辜负信陵君，我在武陵受到太守的提携，也决不忘记您对我的恩惠。
注释
答武陵太守：作者离开武陵（今湖南省常德）将返金陵，武陵太守设筵相送。作者以诗相谢。答：回话，回复，回信。
微躯：指自己微贱的身躯，作者自谦之词。
大梁：战国时魏国都城（今河南开封）。大梁客即指信陵君的门客，犹指侯赢，此处代指诗人自己。
信陵：地名，今河南宁陵。在这里代指魏国的信陵君魏无忌。信陵君曾养食客三千人，以礼贤下士闻名于世。信陵恩即指信陵君礼贤下士，此处代指武陵太守对作者的恩惠。
答武陵太守鉴赏
古时“答”是一种敬称。王昌龄是武陵田太守的门客（即田的参谋），因此辞别（或者说辞职）的时候就专门写一首“答诗”来做交待。对于这首作品读者完全可以分为两个部分来理解。前一句是告辞，说明自己的去向；后一句就是表达对太守的谢意和尊敬，或者说是感激和忠实。
从文采修辞上讲，诗中用典故表露自己的心意。大梁，战国时魏国的都城。魏国出了一位名垂千古的信陵君，他既是有才能的霸主，又是广纳贤才的爱才之君，因此门客们都很愿意为信陵君效力。诗中的大梁客是诗人用来比喻自己的，后面的“信陵恩”比得是田太守对他的恩德。有些评诗的书中有这样的说法：“此体中才与学俱无用也。五绝，仙鬼胜于儿童子女，儿童子女胜于文人学士，梦境所作胜于醒时。”意思是用贤德先人的典故来做五言绝句的素材最能发挥五言诗的长处，这样的作品才是最好的五言绝句。《答武陵太守》中就用典故表明诗人自己的心意，仔细想想确实将忠心委婉妥当得表示了出来，不流于轻浮，读起来也不会使人觉得仅仅是泛泛而言，没有诚意。对于表示感情，没有比这更合适的了。
在此诗中，诗人一腔侠义之情再现得淋漓尽致，透过没有任何“形似之言”的四个短句，读者可以看到颇有英雄豪气的诗人形象。诗人借用信陵君的典故，直抒胸臆，有直接撼动人心的力量。

王昌龄 (698— 756），字少伯，河东晋阳（今山西太原）人。盛唐著名边塞诗人，后人誉为“七绝圣手”。早年贫贱，困于农耕，年近不惑，始中进士。初任秘书省校书郎，又中博学宏辞，授汜水尉，因事贬岭南。与李白、高适、王维、王之涣、岑参等交厚。开元末返长安，改授江宁丞。被谤谪龙标尉。安史乱起，为刺史闾丘所杀。其诗以七绝见长，尤以登第之前赴西北边塞所作边塞诗最著，有“诗家夫子王江宁”之誉（亦有“诗家天子王江宁”的说法）。
