译文
今晚京城不知是什么特殊的日子，到处都是美丽神奇的景象。各种乐器有如万马齐鸣，涤荡着京城的夜空。蜡炬兰灯熊熊燃烧，亮如白昼。
灯红酒绿的街上青楼妓院随处可见，那些出来游冶闲逛的妓女像鸩鹭一样成群结伴。金吾子对妓女成群在街上游冶视若无睹，任其随意拉客。游冶狎妓的行为已经到了疯狂至极的地步。
注释
玉楼春：：词牌名。亦称“木兰花”、“春晓曲”、“西湖曲”、“惜春容”、“归朝欢令”等。双调五十六字，前后阕格式相同，各三仄韵，一韵到底。
皇都：指北宋都城汴京。
特地：特意。特别。绮（qǐ）陌：纵横交错的道路。风楼：指宫内楼阁，也指妇女居处。
珠履（lǚ）：缀有明珠的鞋子，指代豪门贵族。鸩（yuān）鹭客：鸩和鹭是两种鸟，飞行有序，排列整齐，因以比喻朝廷中文武百官。
金吾不禁：取消夜禁。金吾：官名，掌管京城的戒备防务。据韦述《西京杂记》云：“西都京城街衢，有金吾晓暝传呼，以禁夜行，惟正月十五日夜救许金吾驰禁。”
云踪、雨迹：比喻男女欢爱的情事。

玉楼春·皇都今夕知何夕创作背景
这首词亦写皇都元夕狂欢盛况。华灯宝炬，金翠耀目，月色花光，歌吹沸天，好一派节日风光。其夕“金吾不禁”，任都民仕女尽情游赏玩乐，自称“才子词人”的柳三变欣喜若狂，情不自禁地写了这首歌咏太平气象的《玉楼春》。

玉楼春·皇都今夕知何夕鉴赏
这首词描写的是京城夜晚的热闹与繁华。可能是词人刚到京城时所作。上片写京城之夜的喧闹景象，下片则选取了个别情景描绘：“金吾不禁六街游”，金吾不管，满街的妓女随处游荡，拉客到了令人发指的程度。
“皇都今夕知何夕？特地风光盈绮陌。”词人初到京城，对这里不夜城般的繁华与热闹很是陌生，言谈间充满了探究与好奇。特地风光，即指不同于别处的风物人情。首句总写，领起全文。
“金丝玉管咽春空，蜡炬兰灯烧晓色。”这两句对仗工整，既是白描又是极力的渲染。从中可以看出北宋开基百年来相安无事的一个侧面，当时社会较为安定，人民安居乐业。
“凤楼十二神仙宅，珠履三千鹤鹭客。”过片是工整的偶句，采用了互文见义的写法。“十二”、“三千”不是实数，皆虚指，对仗的同时也写出了京城风月场所的潜滋暗涨，社会风气日益低靡不振。
“金吾不禁六街游，狂杀云踪并雨迹。”末句浓浓一笔，对前文的总括淋漓尽致。
词人一生时常出没烟花之地，写此词未必有深刻的主旨。但从其平自的描写中，可以管中窥豹，了解到当时社会生活的一些梗概。京城自古便是富贵显赫、商家大贾云集之地，“光盈绮陌”、“蜡炬兰灯”自不必说。“珠履三千”、“金吾不禁”更令人深深回味，官员与民同乐，不再作威作福，这似乎是社会安定、阶级矛盾缓和的象征，然而偏偏和遍布京畿的“三千”妓女搭配在一起，不能不说是对当时社会的绝妙讽刺，所谓的百年太平，实则已经不太平了，潜在的危机有一触即发之势。

柳永，（约987年—约1053年）北宋著名词人，婉约派代表人物。汉族，崇安（今福建武夷山）人，原名三变，字景庄，后改名永，字耆卿，排行第七，又称柳七。宋仁宗朝进士，官至屯田员外郎，故世称柳屯田。他自称“奉旨填词柳三变”，以毕生精力作词，并以“白衣卿相”自诩。其词多描绘城市风光和歌妓生活，尤长于抒写羁旅行役之情，创作慢词独多。铺叙刻画，情景交融，语言通俗，音律谐婉，在当时流传极其广泛，人称“凡有井水饮处，皆能歌柳词”，婉约派最具代表性的人物之一，对宋词的发展有重大影响，代表作 《雨霖铃》《八声甘州》。
