江南江北两岸，杨柳青青一片。人们在此折柳送别，难舍难分。
我举杯为你送行，伤心的眼泪爬满双颊。我担心你到长安会遇到很多不顺心的事情，也不知道你什么时候才能回来。

柳枝：为词中反复出现的伴唱声。此外，古人有折柳送别的习俗。
违：不顺心。
柳枝·江南岸鉴赏
《柳枝·江南岸》是一首女子送别词，写一个女子送丈夫上京求取功名时的心情。唐人有折柳送别的习惯，所以柳枝与离别总是联系在一起，甚至代表离别。这首词中的柳枝，就是代表离别的，同时又是作为和声加入词中的。和声字可以没有意义，只起和声作用；也可以有意义。这首词中的“柳枝”是声义兼有的。
江南岸，是女子送别的地方。江北岸，是丈夫要去的地方。丈夫要渡江北去，江边多杨柳，所以杨柳又与送别的地方景色有密切关系。女子在送别时见到江边杨柳依依，眼前的景色更勾起了她的离愁别恨。前两句是女子在说：我来到江南岸边送你啊，我们要分别了；你要渡江北去了啊，我们要离别了！江南江北，一水盈盈，隔断鸳鸯，南北分飞。眼前的江水就是天上的银河。女子内心感到十分痛苦，转而埋怨柳枝，老是千百次地折柳送行，无休无止，什么时候才能不折柳枝呢？清代大诗人王士祯有两句诗写出了同样的心情：“灞桥两岸千条柳，送尽东西渡水人。”（《灞桥寄内》）。虽有东西、南北之不同，而怨别心情则是一致的。上片歇拍，这女子干脆直抒胸臆：“恨分离！”恨尽管恨，分离还是要分离。女子的感情逐渐趋向高潮。
下片写女子向丈夫敬酒泣别。留是留不住了。“悲欢离合一杯酒”。女子难过地对丈夫说：“请您喝下这怀酒吧，我们要分离了。我眼泪双垂，难分难舍。”这位女子的感情发展，出于一般人的意料之外，她不是在临别时说几句吉利话，祝丈夫到京城一帆风顺，春风得意，反而希望丈夫到京城百事不利，事与愿违。这似乎不合情理，其实不然，她深知如果丈夫到京城吉星高照，官运亨通，那还不知道要停留到什么时候才能回来呢。为了使丈夫能早日回家，夫妻团聚，亲亲热热过日子，她宁愿丈夫到京百事无成，失意而归。当功名富贵与爱情发生矛盾时，她毫不犹豫地选择了后者。她是多么地珍惜爱情，轻视富贵，表现了她真纯高洁的可贵品质。与苏秦的妻子大不一样。在王昌龄的《闺怨》诗中早曾写过：“忽见陌头杨柳色，悔教夫婿觅封侯。”这位闺中少妇是重爱情而轻封侯的。清代著名诗人袁枚有一首诗：“一枝花对足风流，何事人间万户侯？生把黄金买离别，是侬薄幸是侬愁。”（《寄聪娘》）更是切中了女子的心理，写得深刻而又细致。
这首词中“柳枝”重复出现六次，这一方面是作为和声，适应音乐的需要；另一方面，柳枝也意味着离别，六次出现，犹如重章叠句，一唱三叹，回环往复，起到了深化离别之情的作用，渲染了离别的气氛，强化了词的艺术感染力。
