释宗元（一一○○～一一七六），俗姓连，建宁府建阳（今属福建）人。年二十八出家。久依大慧宗杲禅师，分座西禅。张浚帅三山，以数院迎居，不就。归旧里，结茅号众妙园。孝宗淳熙三年卒，年七十七。为建宁府竹原庵主，南岳下十六世，大慧宗杲禅师法嗣。有《竹原元庵主语》一卷，收入《续古尊宿语要》卷五。《嘉泰普灯录》卷一八、《五灯会元》卷二○有传。今录诗三首。
