襄州襄阳人，字道辅，号溪上丈人。曾布妻弟。为人无行，倚布势为乡里患苦。数举进士不第，曾因忿争而殴主考官，坐是不许取应。章惇为相，欲荐以官，不就。博极群书，有口辩，工文章，喜谈论朝野间事。有《东轩笔录》、《临汉隐居诗话》、《临汉隐居集》等。
