胡谧，字廷慎，会稽(今绍兴)人。明景泰间(1450—1456)乡试第一，旋登进士。任山西佥事提学，能公正地识拔人才，推动当地教育发展。遍历山西各地，查访残碣断碑，故基遗迹。纂成《山西通志》，以资料丰富、体例完善、详略得体而著称。成化十五年(1479)，任河南按察副使，其间兴建大梁书院，祀濂溪以下10人，大力兴学，同时参与编纂《河南总志》，此为河南省第一部省志，体例甚为得当。擢广东参政。历官30年，清廉自守，人称为真儒。
